Utilizing one of the world’s oldest wood preservation techniques, Shou Sugi Ban, an ancient Japanese wood preservation technique that involves charring timber to enhance durability, making it resistant to rot, insects, and fire. Not only does it help preserve the wood, it also adds a attribute of character that frankly no regular wood finish can replicate.

Trees can hold significance for many reasons, whether it be something a family planted together, a planting to remember a loved one, or just a tree in your yard that has grown with you over the years.
Unfortunately, sometimes these trees decline and must come down. As a Career arborist, I do my best to preserve these trees and keep them healthy, but sometimes it is either too late or not much can be done. As a woodworker, I see a chance to give the tree “life” again in the form of functional art.

Pricing is variable, based on time it takes to pick up wood, process, stabilize, and then craft the lumber into selected items as well as any additional supplies such as epoxy to make the wood “whole” again or hardware to build.

Rescued from turning into firewood, this lathe-turned Locust bowl was given a chance at a second life. Cut from a wind thrown Black Locust, it had begun to crack as it dried. Locust being an extremely hard wood is prone to this, but with a little epoxy in the crack it was given a second chance to be something else beside just another hunk of firewood.
Measuring 9” wide and just under 2” tall, it makes an excellent fruit platter.

An astoundingly, eye-catching piece made of Black Palm. Black Palm being a monocot-type tree contains different kinds of inner vessels for conduction of water and nutrients, giving its grain a unique appearance. This wood is also extremely hard and dense making it polish up almost like a piece of stone.
Measuring 3.75” wide and 2” tall, this little dish would work great as a countertop salt dish or even a good vessel for an air plant.

With a flared out foot, it allows for optimal scraping of the sides of the pot, without the drag you can get from a traditional spoon. Works well for soups, sauces, and other stirrables. Includes an eyelet a the end of the handle for optimal storage and display. Every Spurtle made had similar design and sizing, but every one has its own unique variation in the handle grip, meaning you get a one of a kind utensil.
